Anatomy of a Poem – a workshop & reading with Dave Margoshes

Dave will read several poems from his new collection and some older ones and recount their lineage – how they came to be. Some poems, it turns out, are simpler than they appear; others are more complicated.

Bring a poem of yours that you think has an interesting story – some unexpected twist? A poem that turned out entirely different than what you intended? A poem about a person who means a lot to you? It could be anything. Dave will ask for volunteers to read their poem and discus how it came to be.

Bring paper and pen/pencil or some other writing instrument. There’ll be a poem-writing exercise.

Dave Margoshes is a Saskatoon-area writer whose work has appeared widely in Canadian literary magazines and anthologies, including six times in Best Canadian Stories and three times in Best Canadian Poetry. He was a finalist for the Journey Prize in 2009. He’s published almost twenty books of poetry, fiction and nonfiction, including Bix’s Trumpet and Other Stories, which was Book of the Year at the 2007 Saskatchewan Book Awards and a ReLit Award finalist. He also won the Anne Szumigalski Poetry Prize in 2010 for Dimensions of an Orchard. His collection of linked short stories, A Book of Great Worth, was named one of Amazon.Ca’s Top Hundred Books of the Year for 2012. A new book of poetry, A Calendar of Reckoning, his sixth, will be published this spring.
