Join Darla Tenold for a morning of learning and conversation.

The first cardinal rule of writing: Butt in Chair. Many would say the second cardinal rule is read. Read as much as you can. Read widely. Read well. How can we learn about writing from all the reading?

In this workshop, we'll  read two successful short stories written by contemporary writers. We'll discuss what makes each short story successful. We'll ask questions such as:

What is the point-of-view and voice in this story and how are they working?

How did the writer begin and end the story?

What parts of the story are written in scene, narrative and exposition?

Why did the writer make these choices? What do they add to the story’s success?

How is the writer using language in the service of the story?
